Must. Go. Shopping.

Ok, I don't know about you... but as I take care of my kids and all the miriad of other things a mom does I tend to forget that sometimes I need things too.

It has been a long time since I actually went shopping with the intent of getting clothes for ME. Not the kids, not Jer, not quickly grabbing something that will "do". Actually actively shopping for cute stuff for ME.

Now I find myself in a bind. I look in my closet and think... "Meh. Nothing cute." I have things that have potential to be cute but many of them don't fit quite right because a) I grabbed them and didn't try them on in the store because my kids were with me and Me in a Dressing Room + Kids is not a fun picture... or b) I'm overweight. And then there is the issue that the few things I thought were cute got worn all the time and aren't cute anymore due to a) being worn out or b) being out of style.

... and then there is the added problem of cost. Cute clothes are expensive. Especially when your size lands right between "regular size" and "plus size" ... I feel lucky to find something that fits... let alone fits right.

So there is the problem all laid out.

My question... how do I fix it without breaking the bank... because seriously? I could chuck most of the clothes in my closet and SOOOOO not miss them...

Unfortunately, that would leave me NEKED.

I say go thrifting and try to fix up the clothes yourself! I am on a tight budget too and I love going thrifting and finding that one item that I LOVE but it doesn't fit quite right here or here so a little tucky tuck and it's good! But that has only ahppened successfully once.. lol I need to learn to sew better! So if you do, I say you're good to go!

Don't forget to enter to win a tankini of your choice!

honestly, places like target and walmart have cute stuff in all sizes. They aren't, however, the best of quality. I hate that just washing some of those things makes them look 100 years old. Kmart is good too AND it has layaway if that's your kick. But not so good for that "need it now" aspect.
I need pants. desperately. I'm too big for my "smaller" pants right now...so annoying. But I HATE pants shopping. always depressing.

You're going to come shopping with me right? I spent plenty of mornings watching "What Not to Wear" when I had cable, and I got a ton of great ideas. Also, if you have some clothes that you kind of like but you feel don't have enough pizazz, a cute scarf can sometimes do the trick. Jewelry can also really dress up a bland outfit. Don't worry about your weight, you can still dress your body in very cute clothes. Must. Go. Shopping. Together. It. Will. Be. Fun. Maybe. We. Could. Get. The. Guys. To. Watch. The. Kids. For. A. Few. Hours. Okay. I'll. Stop. Now.

I would LOVE to go shopping with you Loni! You have such great taste! Most of my things I really don't like though... isn't that sad?! I have a couple of cute scarves though... :)

And yes, I totally could can Jer into watching the kids. He's so good about that. Just let me know when :)

I'm in the same boat, of just grabbing something that will do. Some places that have good quality clothes but aren't too expensive are Target and JCPenney (I swear they are always having sales). And I was going to say what Loni said, about making it about an awesome necklace or something, because no matter how much weight you gain or lose, a necklace will always fit.

Do you have a Ross Dress for Less nearby? If you have time, the racks are fun to dig through and often there are really cute clothes. This is not to say they always have cute stuff (new shipments every couple of weeks), but when you find something it is always a good value.

Pick three colors that make your skin and facial tones glow! One should be a neutral (black, brown, tan, off white, navy). Buy your main pieces (jacket, pants, skirt) in the neutral you have chosen. Use the other two colors as accents to the neutral. Mix and match pieces. Before purchasing, ask yourself if you need it (is it on your list?) if you love it, and if you can wear it at least two or three different ways. Buy clothing that fits your lifestyle. (I'm always drawn to dressier things, but need casual things). Accessorize!! Handbags, shoes, scarves, jewelry all work wonders and don't have to be "matchy-matchy". Dress for your body shape because, no matter your weight, the general shape won't change. I am pear-shaped and need to draw the eye upward toward my face, instead of downward to the ol' hips. I try to select plain, darker colors for the lower part of my bod; brighter solids for the upper part; and try to wear either v-necks or give the illusion of one by wearing a longer necklace or a scarf. A great website for personalized dressing is MissusSmartyPants.

BTW, shopping at "Sally's" (the Salvation Army), or other thrift shops and value merchants (Ross, TJMaxx) is great and can be utilized with the above:)

So dude. Hop online and watch a few episodes of What Not to Wear. For the past several years, shopping is like torture to me, because I just sit and hate my body how it is now, etc. But on that show, they show the right kind of fabrics and cuts to wear, and those women all look like they've lost like 20 pounds!! I've just discovered the beauty of belts. You wear them over shirts, at the smallest part of your hourglass, which for me is just a teeny bit below the boobs. It makes me look soooo much more put-together.
