A Surprise Phone Call

For those of you that know me well, you know that I'm not particularly close to my sisters.

We live in different states and therefore don't see each other often, and the fact that I am 4 years younger than my closest sibling didn't do a whole ton for the bonding experiences growing up. By the time I was in junior high both of them had gone off to college, then when they got married they had other people to worry about besides 14yr old me. So when I say that I'm "the youngest only child", I have at times truely felt like an only child.
There were times when I really did try to become closer to my sisters by calling them once a month etc... but in the end I didn't feel that it really made any difference and that if anything I was simply being a distraction.
For some reason even though I am a grown women with a husband and children of my own I have usually felt like my sisters consider me to be an extention of my parents, that somehow everything that they tell my parents somehow miraculously gets passed on to me. That somehow I just "Know" what is going on in their lives. Besides, there are always the long distance bills to consider.
Now, the same thing could be said of me. I don't bother much anymore with letting my sisters know what is going on with me unless there is something major going on. I figure they have busy lives and could probably do without the play by play of my life and just fast forward to the touchdowns.

Anyways.... onto the point of the post.

My sister Jo actually called ME yesterday! Now, Jo and I's communication in the passed hasn't been that great. Sometimes we just don't "connect" if you know what I mean. So when I answered the phone she was the last person I expected to hear on the other line. How wonderful to hear from her, and for no better reason than "We haven't talked in a while." It was so good to hear what is going on in her life, that her family was able to buy a house, that her girls were estatic about it, that her job is willing to work around her schedule. It was nice to talk about life a little... in broader terms than "today I did laundry" or some other mundane detail that I do almost every day.
I hope that the call didn't cost her too much, but I know that at least for me, it truely brightened my day.

Thanks Jo.

That's nice to talk to your sisters. I love my sisters...it almost makes me want another girl just so Jenna can have a sister.

How fun to talk! I'm one of those that doesn't call, and I'm grateful I have sibings that do. I'm sure she didn't think twice about the phone bill. It's nice to feel remembered! =)
