Scared for our rights.

OK, for those of you not interested in current events please bare with me.

As many of you know the government seized about 400 children from a polygamist group in TX because of suspicion of child abuse. While I don't advocate polygamy or child abuse (and I'm pretty sure that both occurred in this case to some extent) I am concerned that our government is throwing caution to he wind as far as religious groups go.

This scares the crap out of me that children can be ripped out of a parents arms without so much as one REAL witness to any crime that endangers that child. Also without the court hearing any objections. How would you feel if your children were ripped away from you and you were not allowed to see them simply because some nutcase pretended to be a 13 yr old girl that was abused in your home? Or heaven forbid she pretended abuse in your uncles home? Does that make any sense!?

Our government is too powerful and getting too out of control.

Here is more info if you are interested. The site that it goes to is a conservative site and I don't agree with all he says, but at least he puts forward a good arguement and does a decent job backing it up.

I hear what you are saying April. It's the state agency behind it not the government, they should change the laws or do away with that agency. They can't get them for practicing polygamy and can not prove child abuse so, what do you want to bet they'll use statutory rape. I agree the government is too powerful. What can we do though. I do feel so sad for those sweet children and the mothers whose hearts are broken!

The state agency is part of the government.

Were they supposed to ignore the claim, turn the other way, like so many people have been doing when it comes to these polygamists? We believe in upholding the law and I expect that if I break the law, LDS or not, I should be prosecuted.

We have an address and if there was a problem, they know where to find me. With these people who live communally, this person could have been anyone and they hide their identities. It is a totally different circumstance. They will sort this out and get those precious children into a situation that will be best for them. Do you really want them to just blindly return them back to their parents without investigating? I think that would be a real crime.

the young children are not at risk for being married off. such as infants and 3 year olds. they are doing more damage by removing them then by just leaving them till the investigation is done. Especially where the conditions for the warrent are in doubt. The Infants are not goign to be married off before this is over. What harm would there be in leaving them with their mothers. Especially id they are breastfeeding.

you could argue the same thing for illegal immigrants. they have no way to hunt them down yet they are doing little if anything at all to stop that wound from gushing.

BTW Jer agrees with the Gov on this one. To each there own I guess.

I go back and forth, like I do on so many issues. I don't think this "religion" should be allowed to break the law, BUT our country supposedly believes in freedom of religion. Catch 22.

Ooh, I have a hard time talking about this issue, because I read a book by a woman who escaped this cult. The fact of the matter is, statutory rape is against the law, and polygamy is against the law. I'm actually glad the government finally stepped in. What happens in this cult is horrible, horrible stuff. Just my opinion. I will agree to disagree. :)

So there is really no such thing as polygamy. To be a polygamist you have to be married, to be married it has recognized by the government for it to be legal, so if you are not legally married then you aren't married so you are not involved in polygamy, you are just commiting adultry. Which is not illegal. Now I don't agree with rape or child abuse of any kind I believe that polygamy is harmless if it where legal and only legally consenting adults (for the state in which you live).
And you can't bring up the fact that they would all be on welfare, because then you would have to not let poor people marry and have kids becaseu they would be on welfare... not a good place to take a discussion if you wanna win it. SO recap. Polygamy=neutral, Child abuse and rape= Very bad.
Freedom to worship under the constituion is protected, you can BELIEVE whatever you want, but you might not be able to practice it. Some Wicans believe that nudity is part of their religious rites. but they can't go to the local park and hold a service. that is illegal. Worshippers of marijuana can collect all the paraphinalia they want but they can't grow or use the drug. Polygamist at this time can believe in it all they want but they can't (by laws and by the catch 22 i desribed earlier) practice it.
